The Equine Assisted Growth And Learning Society (EAGALS) of Southern Alberta, (with headquarters in Nanton) hosted a demonstration presented by "Winning Strides" at the Okotoks Agriculture Arena, March 11, 2004.

Equine Assisted Growth And Learning is an emerging field in which horses are used as a tool for emotional growth and learning. EAGAL is a collaborative effort between a licensed therapist and horse specialist to provide a short term professional learning experience.

The demonstration was a 'hands-on' experience for the participating guests to witness how horses play a major role in aiding adults and children in crisis situations.

There was a total of 20 invited guests from various professions, including the RCMP; Victim Services; Camp Carmangay; Royal LePage Shelter Foundation; and CBC radio attending the demonstration as well as 7 volunteer members of EAGALS.

Gerry Anderson and Pat Melvin of the Membership Committee greeted the guests at the registration table, and Nancy Noyce, Secretary of EAGALS along with Brenda Winder, President welcomed everyone prior to the demonstration.

Laurie Messner of Nanton, a certified riding instructor and equine specialist and Cathie Johnson of High River, a certified Canadian counselor and therapist make up the Winning Strides team.

The demonstration was well received by all who participated.

EAGALS of Southern Alberta is a non-profit Society formed to aid children and adults in crisis situations who may not otherwise be able to receive the help they need.
